This is an exceptional opportunity for an expert in power engineering and electronic design to take on a pivotal role within a cutting-edge organisation.
As a Principal Power Electronics Engineer, you will act as the focal point for power engineering and electronic design activities. You will lead design, verification, and manufacturing proposals while maintaining up-to-date industry knowledge to ensure the company’s products remain innovative and competitive.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and develop automotive-grade inverter hardware, including semiconductor power modules.
- Characterise, test, and model key power electronic components and sub-assemblies.
- Lead and own power module qualification testing in line with industry and customer standards.
- Schematic capture, PCB/DBC/AMB circuit layout, and analysis.
- Produce comprehensive technical documentation, including manufacturing packs and test procedures.
- Stay informed on advancements in manufacturing techniques for Power Electronics.
- Apply reliability, risk, and safety analysis tools such as FTA and DFMEA to evaluate hardware.
- Simulate and evaluate electrical and thermal models using cutting-edge tools.
- Engage with customers to exceed expectations and provide expert guidance.
Skills and Qualifications:
Essential:
- MEng/MSc Degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering.
- Strong background in power electronics, with expertise in wide-bandgap power module design and packaging.
- Experience with GaN and SiC applications, DC/DC and DC/AC converters, gate drivers, and EMC/EMI compliance.
- Proficient in prototyping, simulation, and validation techniques.
- Skilled with design and simulation tools such as PLECS, Simulink, Matlab, LT/PSPICE, ANSYS Electronics Desktop, and ALTIUM.
- Ability to develop and test robust and reliable hardware/software solutions.
- Strong communication skills for engaging with internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience mentoring junior engineers and leading by example in best practices.
Desirable:
- PhD in a relevant discipline.
- Knowledge of functional safety standards like ISO26262.
- Familiarity with automotive legislation and guidelines.
- Expertise in designing inverter power-stages for automotive traction drives.
- Chartered Engineer status.
Additional Information:
This role may involve occasional travel across the UK and Europe to meet customers, suppliers, and attend academic events. The ideal candidate will be proactive, self-motivated, and a team player, eager to take on challenges in a fast-paced environment.
