How to Spot a Great Developer in 30 Minutes

In a competitive tech hiring market, time is precious. When you’re trying to identify the right developer for your team, you often do not have the luxury of multiple rounds, long assessments or deep technical panels. This is especially true when top candidates are getting snapped up in a matter of days. So how can you spot a standout developer in just 30 minutes?

At Profectus Recruitment, we have sat in on thousands of interviews. We know what separates the great from the average. Here is how to spot the difference quickly.

1 – Start With Purpose, Not Just Tech

Before diving into code or frameworks, ask:
“Tell me about a project you’re proud of. What problem were you solving, and what was your role?”

A strong developer talks about outcomes rather than just syntax. They explain why they built something, who it helped and what impact it had. It is not just about the languages or tools used. You want someone who thinks about the result and not just the codebase.

2 – Listen for Communication, Not Just Competence

A developer’s ability to explain technical concepts clearly is often overlooked. If they cannot explain how something works in simple terms, they may not fully understand it. They may also struggle to collaborate with non-technical stakeholders.

Ask them to walk you through how an app or system they built works, from front end to back end, or how an API request flows. Clear communication is more valuable than jargon.

3 – Probe for Problem-Solving, Not Perfection

Great developers do not always know the answer. What they do know is how to find it. Instead of giving a trick algorithm question, try:
“Tell me about a time something broke. How did you fix it?”

Listen for structure in their thinking. Did they approach it methodically? Did they use resources well? Did they check logs, roll back, test hypotheses? The ability to solve problems is more important than memorising answers.

4 – Gauge Curiosity and Adaptability

Ask:
“What is a tech tool, language or framework you’ve picked up recently? Why did you choose it?”

Top developers are not stagnant. They are curious, proactive and open to learning. The best ones have clear reasons for their choices. They do not chase trends, but they stay informed.

5 – Test Cultural Fit Without Buzzwords

Do not forget cultural fit. Avoid clichés and generic phrases. Instead, ask:
“What does a great team look like to you?”
“What frustrates you in a development environment?”

This helps reveal whether they will thrive in your setup.

Final Thought

You do not need four interview rounds to find a great developer. You just need the right 30 minutes. Focus on real-world experience, clear communication, structured thinking and a growth mindset. The rest can be taught.

If you are struggling to find developers who tick these boxes, we would be happy to introduce you to some. At Profectus Recruitment, we specialise in placing top tech talent across the UK. We know a great developer when we see one.
